In Spider, an empty column is working memory. On SolitaireHot’s 1, 2, and 4 Suit modes, empty space lets you untangle suits and finish King-to-Ace runs. Filling it with a random low card is one of the fastest ways to stall.
When to create space
Before dealing a new stock row, ask whether an empty column would help reorder suits. In 4 Suit especially, one empty lane can unlock a stuck board more than chasing every short descending move.
What belongs in an empty column
Prefer Kings or long movable same-suit (or legal) stacks that you are actively finishing. Parking a single low card is only justified if it immediately flips a face-down card that continues a run.
Empty-column checklist
- Do not deal stock just because one awkward move remains.
- In 2 and 4 Suit, protect clean suit lanes from mixed cards.
- Use Hint after a deal to spot a newly available empty-column plan.
- Undo a fill if it does not flip anything useful.
